Dug-up roads resulting in dust pollution: MLA

Highlighting that the delay in mending the roads dug up to facilitate various development works undertaken by the GVMC is resulting in dust pollution in Gopalapatnam area, Visakhapatnam West MLA P.G.V.R. Naidu (Ganababu) has sought immediate measures to deal with the situation.

“As a short-term measure, regular watering of the roads should be taken up to check the dust pollution for now,” Mr. Ganababu said after submitting a representation to Municipal Commissioner G. Srijana here on Wednesday.

Water supply project

The MLA said that several roads in Gopalapatnam area were dug up to facilitate the round-the-clock water supply project which is being funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

“The trenches were filled with light soil. Filling the craters with sand was undertaken as a last-minute measure during the recent visit of Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan to the city. This has worsened the situation as dust pollution has emerged as a major issue now,” the MLA said.

Mr. Ganababu further said that he was living in the same area and that he had been receiving complaints about the dust pollution.

“The dust is causing much discomfort and it is affecting the public health. People especially those suffering from asthma and other respitratory ailments are bearing the brunt,” Mr. Ganababu pointed out.

He urged the Municipal Commissioner to visit the area to evaluate the seriousness of the issue and initiate measures to ensure that the dug up stretches are restored.
