Man held for sexual assault on minor girl

The All Women Police Station, East, of Coimbatore City Police on Thursday arrested a notorious rowdy from Puliyakulam on charges of abducting a minor girl and sexually assaulting her.

F. Jose aka Joshwa (30), a resident of Erimedu near Puliyakulam who has more than 30 cases registered against him, was arrested for marrying and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl.

According to the police, Jose, who had married twice, allegedly abducted and married the girl from Erimedu at Annur on June 8, this year.

The Ramanathapuram police registered a girl missing case and traced her on June 12. She was produced before the Mahila Court and admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

The police said that Jose was arrested based on a complaint filed by the girl under Sections 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage), 376 (punishment for rape) of the IPC, 5 (l) (whoever commits penetrative sexual assault on the child more than once or repeatedly) read with 6 (Punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and 9 (punishment for male adult marrying a child) of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

The police said that the leg of the accused was fractured after he jumped from a height while attempting to escape from the police.

Commits suicide

A student hailing from Nepal was found hanging in his hostel room at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in the early hours of Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as a 26-year-old man, who was doing post-graduate course at TNAU. The police said that the man was found hanging at his room in the foreigners’ hostel at the university campus.
