Minister promises support for reviving Kanampuzha river

Water Resources Minister K. Krishnankutty has promised all support to the initiative to revive Kanampuzha river here.

According to an official press release, the offer of support was made when Ports Minister Ramachandran Kadannappally met Mr. Krishnankutty in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. It was decided that the funds would be allocated in the budget to carry out the works envisaged in the master plan prepared by the Haritha Kerala Mission (HKM) for the revival of the river. The HKM has already prepared the map of the river basin and the detailed accounts of the revival project, the release informed.

The press release from the Minister’s office said that Mr. Krishnankutty promised to make detailed water budgeting of the locality and the river. The water budget would include the details such as the present level of water in the river and the level to which water would rise in the event of a flood. A proposal for constructing a small dam at paddy fields at Mundery near Ayyappan Mala, the source of the river, is also in the pipeline to help the farmers do regular cultivation there, the release said. The HKM has been directed to ask the Government Engineering College, Kannur, to prepare a detailed study of the river, the release said.

The Ports Minister proposed increasing the depth of the river to prevent another flood in the areas close to the river. The small river, which was nearly defunct, passes through a part of the suburbs of Kannur town.
