Night safari at Amirthi zoo in Vellore mooted by Forest department

‘Wildlife Week’ celebrations inaugurated; over ₹38 lakh distributed to SHGs

A team of Forest department officials have submitted a proposal to improve facilities at the Amirthi Mini Zoo in Vellore, including the introduction of a night safari, said Dindigul C. Srinivasan, Minister for Forests, here on Wednesday.

Inaugurating the ‘Wildlife Week’ celebrations conducted by the Tamil Nadu Forest department, he said that Amirthi Forest will see its flora and fauna being developed into a bigger zoological park.

While appreciating the afforestation efforts by Forest department officials, he said that it is the duty of the students to share their experiences in saving the environment.

He distributed ₹38.70 lakh worth of financial assistance to self help groups and ₹32.30 lakh to 323 individuals as revolving fund.

Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration K.C. Veeramani said students should come up with innovative solutions to improve the forest cover in their area.

Minister for Labour Welfare Nilofer Kafeel said it is important to compensate for lost forest cover to minimise the human-wild animal conflicts.

District Collector A. Shanmuga Sundaram, Principal Secretary, Environment and Forests, Shambhu Kallolikar, and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, P. Durairaj, were among those who spoke on the occassion.
