No feedback on SWM bylaws

Civic body extends deadline for suggestions and objections from citizens

The civic body has not received a single objection to the draft Solid Waste Management (SWM) bylaws published on September 26. The one-month time period for submitting suggestions and objections expires next week.

Hence, the BBMP has renotified the public notice extending the time period to file objections till October 31.

“We had published the draft on September 26 following a High Court order. But we are yet to receive even a single objection to the draft, which is actually surprising as the city boasts of a vibrant community actively taking part in SWM,” said D. Randeep, Special Commissioner, SWM, BBMP.

Sandhya Narayan, a member of SWM Round Table, said while they are preparing their response and would submit it soon, she was surprised by the lack of response from other citizens, especially because the bylaws dealt at length on bulk generators and contractors, which has a direct monetary impact. “BBMP cannot sit back after publishing it on their website. They need to pro-actively initiate a public debate about the bylaws to elicit better feedback from the ground,” she said.

A copy of the draft bylaws can be accessed at https://bbmp.gov.in/en/swm. Objections can either be submitted manually at the SWM Cell in the BBMP head office at N.R. Square or mail them to [email protected].
