Over 15 lakh students to be given laptops: Sengottaiyan

Two lakh students enrolled in government schools in current academic year.

Minister for School Education, Youth and Sports Development K.A. Sengottaiyan has said that laptops to 15.40 lakh students worth ₹2,100 crore would be given in the coming academic year.

Speaking after distributing 2,326 laptops to Plus Two students at Gobichettipalayam here on Friday, the Minister said that laptops to the present Plus One and Plus Two students belonging to the academic year 2017-18 will be given soon.

He said that two lakh students were enrolled in the government schools in the current academic year and added that alumni were providing funds for carrying out developmental works in government schools.

Smart cards

The Minister said that discussions are on to issue smart cards to students to be used as bus pass from the next academic year.

Mr. Sengottaiyan added that steps would be taken for tax exemption to individual donors to the government schools.

Earlier, when the Minister arrived at the government school, over 100 girl students who had completed Plus Two in 2017 told him that they did not receive laptop in the past two years.

The Minister told them that since the curriculum was changed for the present Plus Two students, laptops are essential for them and the government is distributing it now. He told them that laptops would soon be distributed to them after which the students left.
