Revoke MLAs’ suspension: TDP

Party questions action against three of its members

The TDP legislators staged a protest in front of the main entrance of the Assembly on Wednesday seeking revocation of the suspension of three party MLAs.

Holding placards with captions such as “suspension is unfair” and “will you suspend for questioning?” they raised slogans seeking “justice” for about 10 minutes before the commencement of the proceedings at 9 a.m. The marshals and the police present there did not allow the media to go near the entrance gate. The media was restricted to the fencing near the Media Point. The media was also not allowed to take photographs. Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu arrived a few minutes later to join the protest. The marshals surrounded the protesting MLAs as a precautionary measure. The police kept a couple of vehicles ready outside the Assembly gate to shift the MLAs if need be. But the issue subsided as soon as the bell rang, indicating the House would commence in a while. The TDP MLAs walked into the House along with the placards. On a couple of occasions, they displayed the placards in the House and raised slogans.

The issue

Deputy Speaker Kona Raghupati, who was in the Chair on Tuesday, suspended Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary, K. Atchannaidu and Nimmala Ramanaidu for “obstructing the proceedings.”

Mr. Naidu was also not allowed to speak on the subject – the demand to implement the promise made by Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy that SC, ST, BC and Minority women who attained the age of 45 would be paid pension. The Deputy Speaker ruled that the Chief Minister had given enough clarification on the issue and would not allow further discussion.
