Smart city director moots waste to energy plant

‘The proposal will be taken to Smart City Limited board for approval’

A Coimbatore Smart City Limited director has suggested that the State government and the Coimbatore Corporation construct a waste to energy plant to manage the legacy waste dumped at the Vellalore yard and also for handling the waste generated every day.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, Independent Woman Director G. Krithiha said the Corporation faced challenge on two fronts: managing the waste that flowed everyday into Vellalore and dealing with the accumulated (legacy) waste.

With rapid urbanisation and increase in population, the situation would only go from bad to worse and as a solution, waste to energy plant to incinerate waste to generate power would be a good option.

A Chinese company was in town and its engineers. A French company had also evinced interest, said Ms. Krithiha and added that she would soon take it to the Coimbatore Smart City Limited’s board for approval and also to the State Government.

Ms. Krithiha claimed that a NITI Aayog study had favoured waste to energy over biogas and compost as a method of waste disposal. The NITI Aayog’s recommendation was important also because waste to energy would help recovery of land that was used for dumping waste.

Besides, if stringent condition related to environment parameters were imposed then waste to energy plant would not be a problem. In China and a few European countries there were well established operators and the Coimbatore Corporation should take forward the proposal, she urged.

Coimbatore Corporation sources said the civic body had not yet taken a decision on the method to be adopted to process legacy waste as well as the waste going everyday to Vellalore. If the Independent Director had mooted an idea, the Corporation would consider it.
