Thanjauvur police barricade Thiruvalluvar statue

Statue was desecrated on Monday and on Wednesday, Hindu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath had draped it with a saffron shawl and rudraksha maala

The Thanjavur district police have barricaded a statue of Tamil poet-savant Thiruvalluvar in Pillayarpatti, as a security measure.

The barricade was erected on Wednesday night, in the wake of Hindu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath draping the statue with a saffron shawl and placing a rudraksha maala on it earlier on Wednesday.

Police sources said the move to put up the barricade, consisting of wooden poles around the statue, was taken as a security measure to prevent controversial incidents. On Monday, unidentified persons had splashed mud on the face and cheeks of the statue.

A team of police personnel led by an Inspector of Police has now been deployed near the statue to mount vigil round-the- clock.

Special police teams are also continuing a probe to establish the identity of the unidentified persons who desecrated the statue. Video footage from a surveillance camera installed nearby has shown a man wearing a dhothi proceeding towards the statue and leaving immediately, late in the night of the incident.
