Vocational subjects may get a push in schools

Sisodia to approach CBSE on the issue

The Aam Aadmi Party government will approach the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) with a proposal to treat vocational subjects as main subject in schools and not as additional ones, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said here on Sunday.

Mr. Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio, was speaking at an ‘Internship Celebration Event’ organised by the vocational branch of the Directorate of Education at Thyagaraj Stadium to celebrate the successful completion of internship training programme of over 5,000 students and also to thank the 200 employers for their participation.

“Abdul Kalam dreamt that school education should give vocational proficiency to students. He shared it with us when we asked him for guidance on school education. I am happy to say that we are moving towards realising his dream,” Mr. Sisodia, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said.

“Let’s prepare to get such internships for all 83,000 vocational students. I appeal to everyone from industry to help us do that,” he said.

Mr. Sisodia also spoke about the Skill and Entrepreneurship University, which, the Delhi government said in a statement, was soon to be started.

According to the Education Minister, preference would be given to students of vocational subjects for admission in the university and the Delhi government would soon take the matter up with the CBSE.

“We aim to make vocational subject as a main subject and not an additional subject. We will be talking to CBSE about this. All schools should be having vocational subjects in their curriculum. And these subjects should be treated on par with the regular subjects,” he said.
