VS treated for thalamic bleed

The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) said doctors were treating Administrative Reforms Commission chairperson V.S. Achuthanandan, 96, for “left thalamic bleed” and his condition was stable.

The institute said brain scans had revealed a “small bleed,” and medication to stem the bleeding was underway.

His neurological status remained stable, and the former Chief Minister was responding to treatment. Doctors said his vitals were also steady. Close family members are with the veteran communist leader and doctors from Neurology, Neurosurgery and Anaesthesia departments were attending to him.

The former Chief Minister and veteran communist leader, who turned 96 last week, was hospitalised on Thursday after he complained of breathlessness.

Doctors at a private hospital treated him initially for fluctuating blood pressure and later referred him to the SCTIMST for specialised neurological evaluation and care.

Mr. Achuthanandan appeared to be his usual self when he celebrated his birthday with family and party workers at his official residence here on October 20.

He cut a birthday cake, accepted shawls and flowers from party workers and wound off the celebrations by thanking everybody.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had visited Mr. Achuthanandan at the hospital on Friday.
