Waterlogged roads add to pedestrians’ woes at Vyttila

They have to wade through knee-deep water at Thykoodam and Ponnurunni underpasses

The arrival of monsoon showers has worsened the situation at Vyttila where the ongoing flyover work is causing huge inconvenience to commuters and residents in the area.

Pedestrians have to wade through knee-deep water at Thykoodam and underpasses. Waterlogging has thrown traffic out of gear at both these places.

In view of the flyover construction work, traffic to Vyttila Mobility Hub had been rerouted through the Ponnurunni underpass.

P.S. Shine, councillor in the Vyttila division, said he had taken up the issue with the Executive Engineer of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) three months ago as drains had been blocked because of the expansion of the highway.

He said he had also asked for routing the buses going to Vyttila Hub through the main bypass. Buses could go upto the Vyttila rail overbridge and take a U-turn to reach the hub. This would make the underpass free of heavy vehicles, he said.

Aam Aadmi Party Thrikkakara mandalam convener Foji John said in a statement that though the party had brought the issue to the notice of NHAI officials a few months ago, there had been no response. He warned of an agitation if the NHAI was not taking steps to resolve the issue.

The slush at Ponnurunni underpass has made it impossible for pedestrians to cross the road.

Councillor Baiju Thottaly said that he had taken expert opinion on the issues of Thykoodam underpass and a drawing in this regard would be submitted to NHAI officials.
