Saidan shocks Unique Model in the summit clash

Romalsawma, Hunmawia score in the Mizoram side’s maiden title win

Saidan Secondary School (Mizoram) dethroned Unique Model Academy (Manipur) 2-0 to win the Diamond Jubilee edition of the Subroto Cup international football tournament in the sub-junior boys’ (under-14) category. This was Saidan’s maiden title.

Saidan also bagged the best team award while B. Romalsawma, from the winning team, was adjudged the ‘best player’ of the tournament. The best goalkeeper award went to Manipur’s Bijando.

The Mizoram side showed its attacking intent right from the start and six minutes into the contest, Romalsawma put the team ahead. With two minutes left in the first half, Saidan skipper Hunmawia missed a penalty.

In the second half, Hunmawia made amends for the miss, scoring his 14th goal of the tournament with seven minutes left for the final whistle.

Confidence booster

Hunmawia said later, “When I missed the penalty, I was feeling very nervous, but at half-time, the coach boosted my confidence and told me to just attack.”

Manipur’s Th. Ibochouba was feeling dejected after the loss.

“We tried really hard to come back into the match after we saved the penalty, but that didn’t happen because their defence was strong.

“We will practice hard and win the cup next time.”

Lalbulliana of Saidan was declared the ‘best coach’ while the fairplay award went to Our Lady Mount Carmel High School (Goa).
