Anya Taylor-Joy Says She Was Bullied for Her Looks as a Kid

PSA: Just a reminder that no one is immune to absurd and superficial bullying. Case-in-point: Objectively stunning human Anya Taylor-Joy was bullied as a kid for her looks. Yep. If you listen closely, that’s the sound of everyone reading these words being rendered speechless at the same time.

Anya opened up about her early experiences with bullying when she stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show earlier this week to promote her latest movie, The Menu. The biggest takeaway (other than the extremely unbelievable fact that she was ever bullied for her looks *at all* of course): That Anya’s parents stepped up with some incredibly A+ advice to give her perspective and help her through whole thing.

“I was very, very lucky with my parents because when I was bullied for my looks, my mom always said, ‘You look at the inside of somebody, you look at the inside of somebody,'” Anya explained (per People). “You don’t look at class, you don’t look at anything like that. You don’t look at what they do for a job. It’s just: ‘Do you like that person’s heart?'”

Appropriately, Anya added that she wanted to “give a big shout-out to my mom for that [advice] because it was really helpful.”

This isn’t the first time Anya has opened up about her relationship with her own looks and self-image. In 2020, when Stylist UK asked her what lesson had been the hardest for her to learn, her answer was infinitely relatable (and accurate): “That negative self-talk and negative self-image have a real impact on how you live your life. I think it’s important to spend time analyzing the way you speak to yourself, and why.”

Going to go ahead and assume Anya’s mom also had some words of wisdom about self-talk over the years, too.
