Hugh Grant is currently shooting a new film in Turkey. As schools in London are closed, the Undoing actor decided to take his wife and children with him to sunnier climes and homeschool from there, however he revealed that it had not been plain sailing in a new interview.

Hugh said that his son had “stabbed himself” with a pen after getting frustrated with a maths problem.

The father-of-five made his comments during a chat with his former co-star Drew Barrymore, during a Conversations at Home interview for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.

The duo, who worked together on the 2007 film Music and Lyrics, were discussing the difficulties of working away from family while shooting movies and how lockdown had affected them.

Drew was describing homeschooling as “the hardest thing ever,” when Hugh recounted his story.

“Now that it’s Covid and they can’t go to school in London anyway, we might as well homeschool them,” Hugh said.

“I’ve rented two teenagers to come and homeschool them.

“Poor things, they don’t know what’s hit them. Ghastly,” he continued.

“Homeschool is like the hardest thing ever… it’s really, really hard,” Drew chipped in.

“My son self-harmed himself in front of this young tutor today because he couldn’t do a basic bit of arithmetic – so he stabbed himself in the face with a Biro,” Hugh admitted.

Speaking about his time in Turkey, the 60-year-old went on to talk about what prompted the move.

“I’m here about to shoot a film.

“I bought my family to get them out of London lockdown and I’ve been wallowing around in a pool with a three year old all day.”

“That’s why I’m so red in the face in this Zoom. I keep adjusting the light thinking, ‘What’s happened to me?’”

Talking about being a working parent, Hugh joked that he signed up for his hit TV series The Undoing to get away from his kids, but soon realised that he missed them dearly.

“I have five small children and I couldn’t love them more, but I’m really old, it’s shattering, so I thought great I get to go away and work.

“The moment that I got to JFK each time I felt an overwhelming sense of loss and misery and I really really missed them, so now on this one I brought them with me,” he admitted.

Hugh shares three kids with his wife Anna – John, eight, and two other children, whose names have not been revealed.

The couple, who tied the knot two years ago, welcomed a second son in 2012, while Hugh’s ex Elizabeth Hurley let slip that they had welcomed their third child in March 2018.

The actor is also dad to Tabitha, nine, and Felix, eight, from his relationship with Tinglan Hong.
