He's not the most obvious choice for a male pin up – but fans swooned over Richard Madeley as the TV host celebrated his birthday on Thursday.

Expressing disbelief that the presenter was turning 65, Instagram users dubbed him a "sexy beast" as they commented on a shirtless picture posted by his daughter, Chloe.

"Happy birthday dickie M ya’ sexy beast," wrote one follower, admiring the telly legend's toned torso as he reclined in a deckchair wearing denim cut offs.

Others complimented Richard's physique, writing: "Can't help but admire his waist", "He’s a beaut" and "Gorgeous man".

Perhaps unaware of the online chatter surrounding his appearance, Richard kept things low key on his birthday.

He was spotted dodging rain showers to pick up some shopping in North London, wearing a pair of denim jeans and a white T-shirt.

His outing came as a prerecorded episode of Loose Men was broadcast, impressing viewers who called for it to be made a permanent addition to the schedule.

The hit ITV chat show welcomed an all-male panel as part of Mental Health Awareness Week, where they talked about issues affecting men, and fans loved it so much that they have asked for Loose Men to become permanent.

Richard headed up the panel alongside Jordan Banjo, Martin Kemp and Robert Rinder, discussing everything from male fashion to toxic masculinity.

Martin opened up on his and son Roman's struggles to understand their friend Joe Lyons' death in an emotional chat about male suicide.

Praising the show's different approach, one viewer tweeted: "I love how open and honest #LooseMen are on tackling issues such as suicide and bullying. It’s refreshing to see men speaking about their feelings in an honest and frank way."

The first time Loose Men debuted on our screens was in November, to mark International Men's Day.
