Stephanie Davis needed therapy after filming Hollyoaks rape storyline

Stephanie Davis said she needed therapy after filming her harrowing rape storyline for Hollyoaks .

The actress, 26, who recently returned to the Channel 4 soap in her role as Sinead, has been showered with praise for her portrayal of the upsetting scenes.

And the mum-of-one has revealed that the scenes in which she was raped by her husband Laurie took such a toll on her that she needed counselling afterwards.

Steph, who has been open about her own battles with depression and alcoholism, said talking to a counsellor really helped her cope with the difficult storyline she was portraying.

She told the Daily Star : "We all went into a big meeting and I think because of everything that I’ve been through, I found that day hard."

She added: "They asked if I needed counselling while filming it, and I said yes. It really helped me.

"When you are filming a storyline like this it’s really hard to leave it at the front door like you’re supposed to.

"Especially when you’re at work all day, you spend more time being that character than you do yourself."

Steph and her co-stars Anna Passey and Kyle Pryor also met with the Rape and Sexual Abuse charity (RASA) before filming commenced.

The star described working on the storykline as a "big test" and said she's "proud" of the finished product.

Steph, who is dating co-star Owen Warner, has been shortlisted for Best Actress at this year's British Soap Awards and is proud of how far she's come after giving up alcohol and turning her life around.

She attends counselling and AA meetings every week, but says she doesn't count how many days she's been sober as it's "for life" for her.
