CAMPCO building warehouse at Kavu to store farm produce

Warehouses at Belthangady, Sagar and Thrissur planned

Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd. (CAMPCO) is building a mega warehouse at Kavu near Puttur at an estimated cost of ₹25 crore to store the farm produce.

The warehouse coming up on about 1 lakh sq.ft. will store arecanut, pepper, cocoa beans and rubber, according to S.R. Satishchandra, the president of the cooperative.

It will have six halls of which one each will be for storing cocoa beans and rubber. Arecanut and pepper seeds will be stored in two halls each, he said.

Suresh Bhandary M., Managing Director of the cooperative, said sterilised pepper seeds will be stored in the warehouse. It will also have cleaning and grading units for arecanut.

In addition, the cooperative recently opened a warehouse in the APMC Yard in Baikampady. It will also open warehouses in Belthangady, Sagar and Thrissur (Kerala) in the current financial year, Mr. Satishchandra said.

The warehouses will help maintain the quality of produce before they reach the market, he said.

Illegal import

Mr. Satishchandra said that a delegation of arecanut growers led by CAMPCO along with some Members of Parliament will meet the Union Commerce Minister and Union Home Minister in Delhi on June 24 to urge the Union government to take suitable steps to curb illegal import of arecanut into the country.

Those importing low quality arecanut illegally and glutting them in the market have caused the prices of arecanut to fall in the domestic market. There is a need to curb these attempts.
