Krishna projects set to receive another bout of flood

Discharge of flood from Narayanpur was over 60,000 cusecs on Tuesday evening

Major irrigation projects in the Krishna basin in the Telugu States are set to receive another bout of flood with forecast of heavy to very heavy rains in the catchment areas of Krishna and its tributaries in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a forecast of flood in the measure of 50,000 cusecs to Almatti and Narayanpur dams with the indication of further rise. Tungabhadra too has started receiving about 20,000 cusecs of flood from Tuesday and it is expected to go up further over the next couple of days.

“Since water level in all the reservoirs in the upstream of Krishna and its tributaries — Ujjani, Almatti, Naraynapur and Tungabhadra — is full any flood has to be discharged downstream. Accordingly, the authorities have started releasing flood of over 52,000 cusecs in the afternoon on Tuesday and the discharge from Narayanpur was over 55,000 cusecs at 3 pm,” a flood monitoring official told The Hindu.

Discharge of flood from the spillway of Narayanpur was further increased to over 66,000 cusecs around 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The authorities at Jurala too started letting water in the river course through power generation from Monday night. At 9 p.m. on Tuesday, the inflows into Jurala were recorded at 10,000 cusecs and the discharge of water into the river course was over 29,000 cusecs.

Similarly, the authorities at Tungabhadra dam in Karnataka too started releasing flood into the river course in the small measure as inflows were measure around 20,000 cusecs and nearly 12,000 cusecs was being release to irrigation canals. Drawal of about 6,000 cusecs of water to all irrigation systems sourced on Jurala and 29,000 cusecs to systems sourced on Srisailam including 24,500 cusecs to Pothireddypadu was also continuing.

A CWC forecast bulletin stated that heavy to very heavy rain was forecast for the hilly areas of Maharashtra with the catchment areas of Godavari, Bhima and Krishna. The projects in Telugu State were expected to get increased inflows over the next three to five days. Similarly, Wardha, Wainganga, Indravathi, Sabari and other rivers in the Godavari basin are likely to be in spate for the next couple of days.

Nizamsagar, Sriramsagar, Kaddam and Yellampally were also receiving flood due to rains in the local catchment areas.
