Suspects’ clothes in HSP leader’s murder recovered

Hotel CCTV footage showed them leaving after the murder in new attire

The Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday claimed to have recovered the clothes believed to match the description of the two suspects in the murder of Hindu Samaj Party (HSP) leader Kamlesh Tiwari.

The clothes, which included a blood-stained saffron kurta, along with a bag and a new mobile set were found in a room at Hotel Khalsa Inn here. A blood-stained towel was also found.

The suspects, police believe, checked into the hotel before committing the crime and later dumped their belongings there and left.

The police released the names assumed by the two suspects while checking into the hotel. Both names are linked to Surat, where police claim the conspiracy to murder Tiwari was hatched.

According to an informal note issued by the police based on CCTV footage, the suspects checked into the hotel at 11.08 p.m. on October 17. The following day, when the murder was committed, they left the hotel at 10.38 a.m. While one was wearing a red kurta, the other was in saffron. They carried a yellow plastic bag, which allegedly had the box of sweets they used to gain entry into the house of Tiwari and was allegedly used to conceal the murder weapon.

They returned at 1.21 p.m. before leaving again a few minutes later after changing their clothes, the police and the hotel receptionist said.

Meanwhile, the family of Tiwari met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at his official residence. His wife Kiran, who demanded capital punishment for the killers, said Mr. Adityanath assured her that all her demands would be met. Tiwari’s mother Kusum also expressed satisfaction over the meeting and said she considered the CM her “elder son”.

Later, talking to the media in her native Sitapur, Ms. Kusum said the police coerced her to meet the CM and she was not satisfied with the assurances. “His body language was not as per my expectation,” she said, threatening to “raise the sword” herself if she didn’t get justice.

‘Demands accepted’

After emerging from Mr. Adityanath’s office on Sunday, Rajesh Mani Tripathi, an associate of Tiwari, said three additional demands had been met by the CM.

These were: changing the name of the Khurshidbagh Park in the locality in which the Hindutva leader lived to Kamleshbagh; building a statue of Tiwari in Lucknow and providing adequate security to members of the HSP.
